There’s no better way to begin learning Salesforce than to get your hands dirty in a Developer Org. Reading and watching something being done inside of Salesforce is one thing, but being able to follow along and figure things out as you go is a whole different thing, and a lot of people (myself included) find it a much more effective method of learning.
In this lesson, we’ll learn what a Developer Org is, some of the limitations, and an alternative that you may prefer to use instead – a Trailhead Playground.
What is a Developer Edition Org?
A Salesforce Developer Org, or Developer Org, is a free version of Salesforce that anyone can use to develop their Salesforce skills, or create and test solutions they’re building.
Where to Sign Up for a Developer Edition Org
Anyone can sign up for a Developer Org. It’s as simple as typing ‘Salesforce Developer Org’ into Google and clicking the signup link. Alternatively, use this link.
Top Tip – When you create your org, use your personal email address. Do not, I repeat, do not use your company email address! This practice org is for you to keep; by using your personal email address, you ensure that you can access it, no matter where you work.
Limitations of a Developer Edition Org
Your Salesforce Developer Org has a number of key limitations:
- You can only store up to 20MB of File Storage (Salesforce Files).
- You can only store up to 5MB of Data Storage (Records).
- You can make up to 5,000 API requests every 24 hours.
- You only have the following licenses (there are more, but these are the key ones):
- 2x Salesforce
- 3x Salesforce Platform
- 5x Customer Community Login
- 5x Customer Community Plus
What About Trailhead Playgrounds?
Another alternative to a Developer Org is a Trailhead Playground. These can also be used in a similar fashion to a Developer Org. You can manage your Trailhead Orgs by logging into Trailhead, clicking your Avatar, then clicking Hands-On Orgs.
From here, you can create, connect, or login to any of the Connected Orgs that you have in your Trailhead account.
Summary
Learning Salesforce isn’t something restricted to an elite few. Thankfully, Salesforce has made it easy for newcomers (or those wanting to evolve their skills) to practice in a real Salesforce org.
Using a Developer Org (or a Trailhead Playground), you can practice your Salesforce skills without the fear of breaking any Production functionality. Not only that, but you can bring your Developer Orgs and Trailhead Environments with you wherever you go (they’re not tied to your current employer’s Production org).
