What is Trailhead?

As Salesforce describes it: “Trailhead is the fun and free way to learn in demand skills”.

Trailhead is for everyone, covering topics and learning modules for anyone using Salesforce, from Admins and Developers, to sales leaders and end users. You can expect to learn technical skills, business skills, and even soft skills that will help you on your journey to becoming an awesome admin.

In Trailhead, learning topics are broken down into modules and each module contains units. At the end of each unit, you’ll complete a quiz or hands-on challenge that will earn you points. Once you’ve completed all the units in a module, you’ll get a badge that is displayed on your profile.

To help guide you through a particular learning path, for example, ‘How to Become a Certified Administrator’, there are Trails (groups of modules).

Wait, there’s more! There are also Superbadges available, which are skill-based credentials that you can use to really put your knowledge to the test. You’ll be presented with a real-world business scenario to test your expertise and encourage you to create a solution yourself. Find out more about Superbadges here.

Sign Up to Trailhead

Head over to Trailhead and click ‘Sign Up’ or ‘Get Started For Free’ (both links will take you to the same page).

You’ll be asked how you want to sign up; I recommend signing up with Salesforce using your Developer org credentials so that the two are linked.

You can also sign up with email, Google, LinkedIn, Apple, or Facebook if you prefer.

Complete the Trailhead and Trailblazer Community Module

Now that you have an account and you’re logged in, complete the Trailhead and Trailblazer Community module to become familiar with using and navigating Trailhead.

What’s the Difference Between a Trailhead Playground and a Developer Edition Org?

A Trailhead playground and Developer org are very similar! They are both test environments where you can explore features and practice setting things up. The main difference is that a Trailhead playground will come with Trailhead specific data and sometimes pre-installed packages that are required for completing hands-on challenges. It’s important to use a playground when instructed!

It’s also worth being mindful that you may end up with multiple playgrounds, as some modules or units will ask you to create a brand new playground to complete challenges in. This is usually because you require specific data or installed packages. It’s important to follow the directions and create a new playground. Otherwise, you may encounter errors.

Trailhead Go

You can also learn on the move by downloading Trailhead Go (the mobile app), which is available on Apple and Android phones.
